How to clear ChatGPT memory
Settings → Personalization → Memory → Manage. Delete entries one at a time, or clear the lot. That is the whole answer. The rest of this page covers the parts that trip people up — the difference between memory and chat history, why deleted memories come back, and the one thing worth doing first.
The steps
- Click your profile icon in ChatGPT, then Settings.
- Select Personalization.
- Under Memory, choose Manage. You will see every saved entry in one scrollable list.
- To remove one entry, use the delete control beside it. To remove everything, choose Clear ChatGPT's memory.
- Open a new chat. Changes do not apply retroactively to a thread already in progress.
On mobile the path is the same, under the profile menu. If you do not see a Memory section at all, memory may be turned off for your account or unavailable in your region.
Delete one, not all
Most people arrive here because one specific memory is wrong or embarrassing, and then wipe everything because the big button is easier to find. That is usually a mistake. The useful entries — how you like answers structured, what you do for a living, the things that make responses feel less generic — go out with the bad one, and you will not notice until a week later when replies feel flat.
Delete the offending entry. Leave the rest.
Memory is not chat history
They are two different things in two different settings panels, and conflating them is the most common confusion here.
- Memory — the short list of saved facts carried into every new conversation. Cleared under Personalization.
- Chat history — your past conversations in the sidebar. Managed under Data controls.
Clearing memory leaves your conversations intact. Deleting your conversations does not clear your memory.
Why deleted memories come back
Because ChatGPT writes new memories from what you say. Delete a fact, talk about the same subject next week, and it can be saved again — it has no record that you removed it on purpose.
Two fixes. Say it plainly in the conversation ("do not remember anything about this"), or turn memory off entirely under Personalization so nothing new is written at all.
