Grokbot: what it is, what it can do, and what it forgets

Grokbot is what most people call xAI's Grok assistant — the one that answers in X and at grok.com. It's fast, current, and unusually good at knowing what happened this morning. It's much weaker at knowing who you are when you're not posting.

What Grokbot is good at

  • Right now. Live feed access makes it the strongest mainstream assistant for today's news, sport, markets and discourse.
  • Straight answers. Less hedging than most. If you want a blunt read rather than a balanced essay, it delivers.
  • Public context. If you post, it has a head start on your interests and your writing style without being told.
  • Reaching outside itself. Custom connectors let Grok call other services mid-conversation — including your own memory.

Where it struggles

  • The private you. Your public persona is not your life. Grokbot knows the former far better than the latter.
  • Long careful work. Its default register is punchy. Extended writing and refactoring sessions still feel more native in Claude.
  • Continuity across tools. Anything it learns about you stays in xAI. Move to another assistant and you start over.
